Meet Derrick
A Neighbor, Volunteer, and Public Servant Ready to Serve Cranford’s Schools
My name is Derrick Rose, and I’m running for the Cranford Board of Education because I believe strong public schools are at the heart of a thriving community.
Since moving to Cranford in 2021, I have been grateful to call this town home. Cranford is a community where people show up for one another, invest in their neighborhoods, and care deeply about the future of their children. I’m running because I want to give back to the community we love and help ensure Cranford schools continue to thrive.
Professionally, I work in academic administration at Princeton University’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, where I support operations, finance coordination, training, records, grants, and collaboration across a complex educational and research environment. That work has taught me the importance of preparation, responsible stewardship, clear communication, and making sure institutions function well so that people can do their best work.
Locally, I serve on the Cranford Environmental Commission and have volunteered with organizations supporting students, families, and cultural exchange, including AFS Intercultural Programs. These experiences have strengthened my belief that public service is rooted in listening, showing up, and helping build a stronger, more connected community.
As a Board of Education member, I would bring a practical, service-oriented perspective grounded in respect for students, educators, families, and taxpayers.
Why This Matters to Me
Paying It Forward in Cranford
My mom always told me to give more than you get. That has stayed with me throughout my life, and it is one of the reasons public service matters so much to me.
In college, I had the opportunity to study abroad in China, and that experience changed my life. It broadened my perspective, challenged me, and helped shape the way I think about education, community, and opportunity. Because that experience gave so much to me, I have always wanted to pay it forward.
That is part of why my spouse and I became involved with AFS and international exchange. In 2025, we hosted Andreas, an exchange student from Denmark who attended Cranford High School. During the 2025–2026 school year, we hosted Kerim, a student from Germany, who became deeply involved at CHS through football, track, and classroom discussions.
Through that experience, I came to know Cranford schools in a very personal way: Friday night football games, conversations with other parents, busy schedules, school paperwork, and the hectic, joyful rhythm of supporting a student.
It also gave me a practical view of where families could be better supported. Our experience has been wonderful, but some processes — including student registration, athletic registration, and required document submissions — could be clearer and more efficient.
In my professional life, I spend a great deal of time improving systems, streamlining processes, and helping organizations work better. If elected, I would bring that same practical, service-minded approach to the Board of Education: looking for ways to make school processes easier, communication clearer, and the experience more family-friendly, so parents can spend less time navigating systems and more time supporting their children.

Kindness is not passive.
It is an active choice to listen carefully, speak honestly, treat people with dignity, and make decisions with care.
In our schools, students learn not only from what they are taught, but from what adults model. They see how we disagree, how we solve problems, and how we treat one another when the issues are complicated. A strong school community should model respect, fairness, responsibility, and compassion.
As a Board of Education member, I would bring a commitment to thoughtful leadership rooted in service, preparation, and kindness — not as a slogan, but as a standard for how we work together.
